Hit and run girl jailed

A TEENAGER has been jailed for her part in a hit and run in which a young cyclist was killed.

Saffron Homewood was sent to prison for 12 weeks this morning (December 21) after a court heard how she drove off after hitting cyclist Franco Sicurella in an accident in Lottbridge Drove in July.
Mr Sicurella, who was part Italian and part Venezuelan, had been cycling to his home in Hyde Road after a shift at nearby Gardeners Books when he was struck by a Vauxhall driven by Homewood, who did not have a licence or insurance.
The court heard 18-year-old Homewood panicked after the collision and carried on driving.
She was blasted by the judge in the case for leaving 26-year-old Mr Sicurella dying in the road.
District judge Roger Ede told Homewood, "It was a hit and run. You knew he was seriously injured lying in the road. You could have called an ambulance. You didn't know he was going to die and you are not responsible for his death but your responsibility was to stop. You sacrificed his life to avoid prosecution."
Homewood had admitted failing to stop after an accident and report it, driving with no insurance and without a full licence.
Alan Hobden, defending Homewood, said she was full of remorse and regretted her actions on that night.
